Homage to Pythagoras
Pythagoreans called Tetraktys any set or sum of four elements. Its basic unity is the point. Two points make a line; three, a triangle and, therefore, a plane; and four, a tetrahedron and, consequently, a space.
According to the Aristotelian understanding of the concept of perfection, things are perfect when they are finished, completed – the limit, the end, is seen as perfection. In a generic, Pythagorean sense of perfection, the number four is the perfect number, as four is the last number obtained when you move from the point to the line; from the line to the plane; and from the plane to the space, as a fifth point cannot be represented outside of the space defined by the four vertices of the tetrahedron. Thus, also the sum:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
whether it is the set – or the tetrad of the unity, of the duality, of the trinity and of the tetrad – or whether it is the decade, it is perfect and it contains the whole.
The poetic formula of the Pythagorean oath has come down to us through a number of sources; and its more current and exact form is the following:
“No, I swear by him who transmitted to our soul the Tetraktys, eternal Nature’s fountain and supply”.
The Tetraktys does not lend its name to the presentation CD of «Sea Strings», but gives it its form. It summarises the passage of «with one's hands» – which started off at a point that on being opened, it became a line –, «República Mediterrània» – which when you open it became a plane as a surface –, and it ends with the Tetraktys, which on opening it becomes a space in the shape of a tetrahedron. In the three works, what is important is what is being shown, the way it is being shown, what has to be discovered, what is being said, the way it is being said, what is being silenced and what the music explains.
